Permit me a moment of despair

I don't think I will ever have a job I am happy with.

Everything that starts out sounding good and challenging and rewarding eventually devolves into a steaming pile of hate.

  • Book store: Working at a book store! Totally cool! But oh, wait, so much shelving. So much moving things to fit new things. Occasional irritated customer though honestly it was the best customer service job I had - little to be irritated about as a customer when buying something purely pleasureful like books it seems. Had to hock the rewards card which sucked.
    • Main downsides: Repetitive. Unpredictable hours. Low Pay.
    • Main upsides: Books! Talking to customers with recommendations that were appreciated. Comparing book tastes with customers.
  • Department store: Salesfloor. Putting clothes away. All the time. ALL. THE. TIME. Customers rude or inconsiderate - knocking clothes off racks, unfolding things and leaving them laying around, letting their children run amok. Expectation was to cover cashier at times. People were rude. Had to hock credit card. Often very bored at work.
    • Main downsides: Terrible hours. Working on holidays. Customers are jerks/rude. Repetitive. Boring.
    • Main upsides: Employee discount...? I don't know. Ultimately I didn't like this one for much of anything.
  • Treatment Center: Working with troubled teenage girls. Good cause. Didn't know how violent it could be. How stressful. How much I'd hate the authoritarian I'd become.
    • Main downsides: Violence. Stress and tension due to constant threat of violence. Anger.
    • Main upsides: Some of the girls were very sweet. Sometimes you felt like you could make a difference. Enjoyed leading groups about things I loved or that I knew would interest the girls.
  • Package Delivery: This was a seasonal job running packages from the delivery truck to doorsteps. Did it one Christmas.
    • Main downsides: Cold. Wet. Sometimes icy. Hours often ran longer than scheduled.
    • Main upsides: Driver was nice. It was nice to be physical in a job and be tired at the end of the day.
  • Front desk at medical clinic: Again, customers are THE WORST. People complained constantly about prices, about wait times, about treatment, about scheduling. EVERYTHING. Sometimes were abusive or mean. People tried walking out on their balances all the time. Were asked to "upsell" services occasionally which I disagreed with on principle.
    • Main downsides: Customers. Expectation of collections vs angry customers. Expectation of "upselling" in my view inappropriate for a medical facility. Often boring when no people there.
    • Main upsides: Coworkers were cool. Cause was worthy.
  • IT support for medical record software: This job was my dream when I started it. More money than I'd ever made before, the ability to affect real change and improvement, tons of learning and skill development. But five years in, the shine has worn off and I don't know if it's only the job or the company in a larger sense.
    • Main downsides: Customers - everyone seems to be complaining at all times. Expectations exist for you to fix things you have no control over. No one is ever happy with changes and changes are made constantly. No credit for what we do do.
    • Main upsides: Good pay. Great hours. Very flexible. Work from home Fridays. Occasional problem solving leading to accepted solutions. Reputation as knowledgeable problem solver.
This is it for now. Stew on that, brain.
