(Working on self improvement. Always working on self improvement. I think that's the point of self improvement. Anyway, source of this particular madness is a list called "15 things to give up to be happier" or something similar - will actually find the article to cite when I have more time)
Starting at the top, giving up the need to always be right.
This is a tough one for me.
I think everyone gets a huge hormonal/brain chemical boost from being right. It's genetically programmed to encourage us to make correct decisions. It ties into leadership and ability to coordinate groups of people. It ties into competitiveness.
But what I think we lose sight of when we're not particularly "examining" the circumstances around being right, is that too often we take wanting to be right all the way into insulting or harming other people and our relationships with other people.
"Would I rather be right, or would I rather be kind?" -Wayne Dyer
It's almost always better to be kind.
I will be watching myself for "insisting I'm right" sort of situations today, and until I feel like I have a grasp on this. I will hopefully report it back to blog (although I *am* the worst blogger alive, consistency-wise).
We have a staff meeting in half an hour - perfect place for that undesirable trait to emerge. I'm watching for you.
